Must-Have Assets for Creating Amazing Unity 2D Games

You may have an endless number of assets in your library, but these are the absolute best.

I will start by saying that I am not sponsored to sing my praises for the following assets. I use them daily and provide a shout out. I would highly recommend you wait to purchase the more costly Assets when they go on sale!

Also please note that I am only presenting Tools, and not Art in this article. There’s plenty of great Art assets out there — but these are guaranteed to help speed up your development cycle!

If you are a seasoned Unity developer you will already know 80% of these assets. However if you are new to Unity, here’s where you can browse for these assets and more.

Animations are the key element of most games, and DoTween provides both a robust and easy-to-use suite of tools. You may have your favorite tweeing library already, but I would highly suggest giving DoTween Pro a try. While there is a free version, the Pro version comes with an Editor tool and additional libraries for TextMesh Pro and other libraries. If there’s any Asset you decide to buy, choose this one!

Modern UI Pack — $20

As the name suggests, upgrade your UI tooling with this amazing Asset. It comes with a very flashy Demo Scene to explore and learn more about what you can do. If your app is UI heavy, Modern UI Pack is a great investment.

Lean Touch+ — $15

An upgrade for one of the most popular Touch Screen control libraries, Lean Touch gives you code-less touch controls for your game. If you are focused on Mobile development, this is a clear must-have.

Editor Console Pro — $30

If you are used to Terminal, you know that parsing through and reading logs is quite a pain. Editor Console Pro gives you the ability to filter and search through logs that are color-coded. That’s more than enough of a sell!

Anima 2D — FREE

A free (yes, you read that right, FREE) 2D animation tool! Anima 2D was purchased by Unity Technologies and is an official part of the editor. If you enjoy rigging and animating bones on 2D models, this is your go-to! I’ve been using this one for a while and it has never disappointed — it is easy to use and understand.

JSON Object — FREE

If you come from a web development background, you know what a JSON object is. It is quite literally a javascript object, and this format for data has become popular across all technologies. Especially for developing networked games, parsing and utilizing JSON objects through this FREE asset is a breeze!

FlatFX — $7

This one skirts the line between art and tool. Flat FX creates geometry-based 2D effects for your game, generated in real time via C#! The effect is sleek and stunning, and while the library is only limited to a handful of effects, you will find yourself coming back to use this handy tool quite often!
